Clay Club Registration

from $160.00

Clay Club returns! Explore this ancient medium in a casual, four-week class setting. Meet delightful individuals, enjoy some tunes, and squish your cares away as your friendly neighborhood ceramicist guides you up the clay mountain!

Two sections are available.
Section 1:
Wednesdays, March 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th
5:30pm-8:30pm
OR
Section 2: Saturdays, March 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th
12pm-3pm

Participants will learn about hand building fundamentals including coil building, slab construction, and pinch potting, as well as methods for attaching handles, feet, or decorative 3D elements. The class will also explore various surface decoration methods including carving, underglazing, and glazing. After demonstrations and a look at the work of a few prominent hand-builders working today, each student will decide on one project for the remainder of the class. Together with the instructor, students will strategize the best plan for executing the project using one or more of the covered techniques. This project could include a single, more detailed vessel or sculpture, or a set of smaller items. This class is suitable for complete beginners or those with some clay experience who wish to revisit and hone their skills. The curriculum may be old news for more advanced students. Clay Club is geared towards adults. Teens 16 and over are also welcome to register.

Each student will be provided with clay plus access to slip, underglaze, and a selection of in-house glazes. All firing services are also included. Classes will take place in the Golden Object studio, located next to Jones Falls in a converted garage in Mount Washington, Baltimore. We’ll have the garage-style doors open when it’s nice out and closed when we want to stay toasty. After registering, students will receive an email with the studio address and more information about the first meeting.

Accessibility:
The studio is wheelchair accessible. The only restroom is in a nearby building and requires walking up a grassy incline and climbing stairs.

Covid-19 precautions:
As the class size are small and the space is well ventilated, masking is not currently required. I will pay close attention to local case rates and reserve the right to require masking if I deem it necessary. If you are not willing to wear a mask for the entire duration of each meeting if requested, please do not register. Failure to mask if asked will result in you being asked to leave the class without a refund.

Sliding scale tuition:
Tuition is offered on a sliding scale. Standard tuition is $210. A limited number of modified tuition slots are available at $190 or $160. Keeping in mind that this class is priced lower by the hour than any large pottery studio in the area including supplies and firings, if you can afford to pay standard tuition, please support my work and help keep classes like this more accessible by doing so. If things are tighter and full tuition presents a significant barrier to enrolling, please use a modified tuition option. That’s what it’s there for! Tuition payment in installments is also available. Just contact me using the contact form on this website.

If you are purchasing registration for more than one person or for someone other than yourself, please leave a note at check out with the name(s) and address(es) of the other registrant(s).
